The Duke of Rothesay was the oldest Scottish Duke and was first conferred, 1398, on David, Earl of Carrick, eldest son of King Robert III of Scotland. It has, since that time, been the title of the eldest son and heir-apparent of the ruling monarch. In the event of the first-born dying without an heir the title passes to the sovereign’s eldest surviving son; and if there is no son or heir-apparent the title reverts to the sovereign. H.R.H. The Prince of Wales, is Duke of Rothesay, Earl of Carrick, and Baron Renfrew, in the Scottish Peerage. He is also Lord of the Isles and Great Steward of Scotland.
