In their clan history, there are two branches of Macauley. The Ardencaple Macauley’s were a branch of Clan Alpine, and in 1591 were associated with Clan MacGregor as septs. The Macauley’s of Lewis followed the MacLeods of Lewis and claim to be descended from Aula.
